Shot in Italy with Armie Hammer and Timothée Chalament as the main characters, it's a sort of coming of age story, told in a very grown up way. There is great chemistry and big love, heartbreak and social rules and limitations. It takes place over the course of a summer in Italy, a student, Oliver, comes to stay with his professor for his doctoral dissertations, it's the early eighties. The world wasn't where it is today, it seems to move slower and with more attention to detail. Over the course of these six weeks, Oliver gets to know Elio, the son of the professor very well, first there is nothing which becomes everything. 

Elio is  a seventeen year old, inexperienced young adult, who loves transcribing classical music. He speaks multiple languages fluently, he spends most his time outside, with his friends swimming or reading and writing. He is an extraordinary Seventeen-year-old. Oliver is twenty four, not shy at all, a very outgoing, saying things as he sees them, kind of guy. He is wrapped up in his studies about discovering historic artifacts and also enjoying life to the fullest, he loves the house, the food and the locals. Very fast he is part of the group, and keeps everybody wondering where he is off to when he disappears with a simple "later". 

Every year, the professor invites one of his students to the house to spend the summer and work on their dissertations. Elio doesn't think much of it, when Oliver arrives, he has to give up his room and show him around town, that's it really. There is a bit of suspected arrogance on Elios side, he thinks Oliver is very short with them and seems to think himself better. 

Over the course of the next weeks he learns different and they become friends, before they dare to admit anything more. 

This film is a beautiful love story, between strangers who seem to have nothing in common until they discover that they are two halves of the same soul. It is a very calm movie, trying to remind you about what life is all about. With a very loving and intelligent family, Elio is blessed to be able to be himself, Oliver doesn't have that same luck. They are star crossed lovers in a time that didn't accept them as such and a time where love had a stereotype, a box it had to fit in to. Even though times have changed, and people have too, it is still a relevant and important topic. It is a movie which tries to encourage love and the freedom to be oneself. Showing young humans that there should not be a label, no stigma and no rules to love.
